Do you need both throttle cables?

Do you really need to push cable on the stock controls? I notice alot of the aftermarket throttles have just pull cables. I mean there is a return spring on the throttle bodies. Any input? Thanks

What purpose does the push cable serve?

my guess is its just a safeguard to ensure the throttle closes when you let up on the gas. i only have the pull cable on my bike but, im running a carb.

only the pull cable here. throttle goes much easier.
if it would be stuck, i'd hit the kill-switch.

my honda has only one cable stock. so i don't think that it's a big safety issue

    +1

You can also install a small (extra) spring for aditional return pull.

I'm curious as to how pertinent that idle cable is myself. It would clean up a lot nicer if I had just ONE wire to match my clutch cable. That way my internally wire bars would really pop. Anyone have any ideas about whether or not we HAVE to have this cable...?

I have been paying attention lately and have seen several Roadstars running one cable with the stock controls. I saw one the other day and the guy had found a little chrome plug to cover the extra hole in the throttle housing.

Been running mine for over 3 years without the push cable. Looks much better also without all that cable clutter.

Just add a return spring at the throttle body like independent_lemming stated.

Do you have another return spring on yours? Any way I could see a pic of how it is set up at the throttle body. That is if you can see it anyway

I don't see the purpose of using an additional return spring on the T/B's as there is half the friction if you eliminate the lower cable. As timoken states the throttle is much easier with one!

IMO, the sole purpose of the decel lower cable is, it will become a PULL CABLE in an Emergency situation if the Upper cable breaks and or snags-up and the T/B return spring fails or hasn't enough force to close the throttle body completely.

EDITED: My 1971 Honda CB750K1 with 4-carburetors had a dual Push-Pull throttle cable that was an improvement over the earlier model years with 4-pull cables only!

Maybe just as back-up incase the stock spring breaks or something?

No I don't have a second spring. I was just suggesting it as a precaution. But it should be pretty easy to do if you feel the need for the added insurance in case of failure of the factory spring.

I run just one.  I see it as a safety overkill along with all the safety switches, belt guards, stickers, etc...  Just another knee jerk response to law-suit happy people...
