    Rear tire size

    Hello,

The stock rear tire size is 200/50/17. Is that gonna be a problem if I use 200/55/27?

    Thx

The rear end's gonna be a little bit tall isn't it Stick out tongue

    I know you mean 200/55ZR17  . .  lol.

What brand, and is it a gum racing tire?

A good fitment baseline is to compare it to the Metzeler 210/50ZR17 because its a tight fit with no mods to the swing arm etc.

If you go to the Manufacturer's website, they'll have all the actual dimensions of each tire size then you'll know for sure what you're up against.

    Haha..sorry for the typo.

Yes I'm thinking of buying 200/55/17 instead of 200/50/17

Its DUNLOP D205 200/55R17 <------ NOT ZR rated

Is that gonna be ok? any safety concern?

I see we were typing at the same time!

Yes the Dunny 55 will be fine - see below for rim and load data chart.  OEM is 6" rim width.

    OEM 200/50ZR17 Dunlop D220
    . Tire Width: 7.64"
    . Tire Diameter: 25.00"
    . Tread Depth: 8/32
    . Rim Range: 6" recommended
    . Capacity: 853#
. Weight of Tire: not listed

    Wheel - Rear - OEM: Cast Aluminum 17MCxMT6.00 (17" x 6")

I don't have the Metz 210mm dimensions handy for overall width but for your specific question in this post it won't matter anyway.

If what you are looking at is the Shinko R005 its a marginal tire but its cheap.  The 55 should be a bit narrower than the 50 series and a bit taller.  It should fit if your rear suspension is OEM height, but I couldn't find Shinko dimensions to verify rim size etc.  If you mount it yourself then you don't have to factor install$ into your overall cost-per-tire.

Yes its for a 6" rim and  load capacity is fine.  Good to go.

    Re: Rear tire size

I have a 200/55 Avon on mine right now. The two bolts that hold the rear part of the saddle on (2002 model) will cut the tire if you bottom out. I ground those bolts off flush inside the fender. Solved the problem.

This new Avon Cobra is now my fave.  Not Z rated, so I try to keep it under a buck thirty.

    Re: Rear tire size

For those of you who don't know.  Here is how to read tire sizes.

Lets say you have a 200/50R17 tire

The first number 200 is the width of the tire in millimeters (I'm sure most of you knew that)

The second number 50 is the aspect ratio.  It referrs to the size of the sidewall.  In this case the the sidewall would be 50% the size of the width of the tire, or 100mm

    The R stands for radial

And the third number 17 is the wheel diameter.

Ok, well I guess I can keep it under 149.  Wink

Don't believe that "zero growth" nonsense. My front Cobra grew up and torched the paint on my fender chasing yous guys up Sonora pass.

You'll like the tire, even if the sidewalls are a pain to keep clean.

    Re: Rear tire size

Just got the DUNLOP D205 200/55R17 200/55-17 from ebay for $155with free shipping (i guess that's pretty good deal) today and I put is side by side with the original 200/50/17 and kindda worry if it will rub the inner swing arm (closer to the rear spring) and the tire has tall wall and will make the bike taller.

If I adjust the rear shock to the lowest possible number (make it smooth), is that will make the bike lower?

    Thx

    Re: Rear tire size

If your bike is stock height you'll be okay.  Its just an extra 1.1" overall height, and its centered on the axle so it'll be 1/2" closer to the fender. The other 1/2" is rolling down on the pavement!

Many members have dropped their suspensions so the rear fender comes down like 1-1/2" with stock tires, no problems.  Except maybe if you have a passenger and luggage, then who knows.
