    RF_WIZ:

You guys must be having better luck than me. My bike has less than 9k on it and I'm on my third cable (stage 4 clutch and springs). 1 OEM and 1 Yammi SS. They both broke at the lever. Because of my new front end I now have to get a longer cable. Has anyone had any luck with custom cables from Phats or should I look elsewhere.

P.S.  If any one has a SS one that's longer than the OEM and wants to trade for a Yammi SS (stock length) that has less than 100 miles on it PM me.

Based on your current gallery photos your clutch cable is way to long Surprise ...

Of course, now that I'm out of the bike business, all damn bike shops are closed on sunday. Bastards. I'll just watch football and drink beer, instead! See if I care! Big Smile

Gonna see what kind of availability difference might be between the two different options - since I'm fresh out of patience, it may be my way of deciding which one I buy.

Alan, are you refering to this picture? Why 2" extra would affect the performance of a Barnett cable?
I ask this because I plan to get an extra 2" on my cables, just to make them arch better and not be so tight...

I actually just had to replace mine on Friday. One dealer around here had it in stock. At least I was able to tell it was about to go Thursday night. Went out and realized the lever just wasn't right. Looked and saw the fraying at the lever ferrule. It was able to last to get it home again.

Motorcycles are great some of us ride them and some just like to look good standing next to them.

a while back i oiled my yamaha ss cable with motor oil using the taped bag method as mentioned earlier and shortly afterward i noticed how the sheathing turned an amber color probably due to the motor oil( and yes, it was clean oilWink)  i've since installed a barnett ss cable and have 2 stock cables as back ups as well as a stock belt, better to have more than you need than to need more then you haveBig Smile

let me take the liberty of answering this one for alan,( i know he'll scald me if i'm wrong Devil )  the shorter cable has to bend a little harder than a longer one will therefore causing more friction on the cable not allowing it to "slip" as easily, the longer  cable will pull easier with less friction due to the decreased binding that will take place, imo it will look better too.  plus by purchasing a new one you'll be helping to stimulate our economyGeeked, that is, if you were to buy it from some place here in the statesSmile

    Hey Alan,

Don't go by that pic. As you recall I had some ignition issues because I was in the process of raking the front end. Because of the rake I had to go to a 10" rise so the bars won't hit the tank also the cable is now routed through the center of the trees. It needs to be about 8" longer. I'll post pics of the left side of the bike as soon a I get a chance

Got this bike for my wife.....Not a bad trade uh? Stick out tongue

Just my .02 here .... the shorter clutch cable with a proper cant at the clutch perch is more desirable for the following reasons:

    • Less friction w/ a shorter overall cable
    • Less stretch to the center swaged cable that is in tension
    • Less movement in the outer sheathing that is in compression and effects modulation

This makes me wonder why I didn't notice any difference the several times over the last 30 years on a couple different bikes when I emergency-installed a couple-inch-longer clutch cable and never noticed a difference.  Maybe I was just happy to get back on the road Wink.  Seriously, I never noticed a stiffer clutch lever from adding 2" across an arc of cable.  Many OEM's make the clutch cable a bit longer just to match the cable on the throttle side.

I agree that cables with the wrong entry-angle were stiff as heck and didn't work out too well even in an emergency.  When it happens again I'll pay more attention.
