    Disc Lock anyone?

Was wondering what you fellows that do not have an enclosed garage do to secure your bike?  Mine will sit under a semi enclosed car port and am looking for some added piece of mind.  I know disc locks ar bad if you forget about it and drive off but what are your opinions? I am looking at the ABUS detecto 8000 if anyone is curious.

So far all I've done is cover it and pray nobody screws with it which has worked well enough but I have a feeling I should do more.  I've considered the disc locks but I don't really want the hassle which I know is ridiculous but I don't have bags to toss it in when it's off.  Some models are so cheap there's really no excuse for taking that precaution but I guess I learn the hard way.

    Re: Disc Lock anyone?

A few years ago i sort of invented the Disc-Mate - to stop myself from riding away, or not! with the disc lock still attached - ouch! - have sold, well made more than i've sold, to friends [even stamped a mobile no. on the side of tube in case they went missing] - it is simply a piece of pvc flexy transparent 10mm dia.coloured tube with a couple of small holes one end for a key ball-chain to pass thru' thats then attached to my key ring - all we do is put disc lock on, at the same time remember to push ignition key into tube - not so easy to ride away with a bit of tube on ya key when you return is the idea! - i've always prefered to detach my ignition key from lock keys when about to ride off anyway so chain and tube don't rub head plate - disc locks are easiest to use by far - usually goes on front disc - that's where i wear mine - actually i use a 2 piece shackle lock with special key - just don't use the ones with a 'ring' shape key - i can open one of those in 2 mins or less with a biro!! - they were outed here in Uk couple of years ago as useless - but you'll see them around still - get a proper insert key type - some have an alarm if tampered with, which could be useful [my son used one until he inherited my bike bits and disc lock] - i have strapped the bag for the lock beside the passenger seat to store - Out of interest here in the uk and se london even, the insurance underwriter didn't require extra alarms or locks, not even garaged, as the warrior is too rare to steal for parts, and too big to joy ride apparently - so i can park up, out the ignition key and just cooly walk away anytime anyplace [not that i do at night! never ever! even in a secure gated estate] - regards tomba

Well, I was just thinking about how to store it on the bike and came up with and idea.  Basically cutting a piece of plate or a ring that the lock will slip over and lock it to the plate.  Permanently attatch the plate to the bike some where and when you need to store it you just lock it to the plate.  When you need it unlock it from the plate and install.  Oh, and that reminder idea with the tube, BRILLIANT!  Gonna have to do that.

I have a Xena XN-15. I also dont have a garage so I keep the lock on it overnight but also under a non-contact foldable cover.

I cut 2 10 ft treated 2x6 and made side mounts along the length of the cover. Out of the lengths, I cut 2 crossmembers for a front piece at the front tire and for a mid section to prop up the bike so it isn't at full lean on the stand and also holds down the shell. The midsection also keep the lengths square. I put the boards on framing metal corners and it is solid. It also allows air in under when hot to vent on the front and rear of the cover.

The shell was I think $150 shipped and the lock was $80 shipped.

    With the lock:

The above is my setup at home. I don't take the Xena to work since it is quite heavy but maybe once I get some type of luggage I may change my mind.

I am in the process of installing (deciding on placement) a DEI (Clifford,Viper) alarm. I looked at the Scorpions but decided against the 2-way since the 2-way on my truck doesn't go into buildings well like Walmart, work, HomeDepot so whats the point.

The one point I liked of the Scorpion alarms was the RFID which meant once on the bike, you didn't have to disarm it so I guess putting on your helmet wasn't bad while trying to hold your key. But then again you had to start the bike with the key so what is the point with that?

I bought a Merlin/Hornet 3000 which is a DEI/Viper/Clifford umbrella'd alarm, same company. This also allows for many 'add ons'. It is a single box alarm with siren, backup battery and tilt sensors. Add on sensors for perimeter (radar/microwave) and stage shock are aviailable on ebay for cheap $10/ $25 respectively.

The biggest problem is under seat space. I will probably remove the tool bag, mount the Power Comannder III there and put the Merlin alarm where the PCIII would have been. It is tight (real tight) and leaves space behind the 'fusebox' for the shock mount. I will lay the radar sensor on top of the rats nest just under the seat since it works through plastic/foam and leather better that steel.

I was reading the alarm manual and it has a single channel out that triggers a ground on for 3 minutes unles you turn it off sooner. I was thinking of using this for a LED accent relay to set off lights under the bike.

The Merlin also allows for a  key remote like the below picture. Could be good since I hate rings vibrating ont he tree and scratching the hell up when driving.

Its probably overkill but I am a little paranoid with three guys being able to pick up my bike and throw it onto a truck and be gone within 10 seconds.
