    Clutch Cable

So, my clutch cable broke riding back home from the beach Sunday and I need to get a new one. I don't know what brand was one there as I bought the bike used. What do you guys recommend? Are there any cables that require less pressure than others. Would like something better on my surgically reapaired arm...

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago to an aftermarket cable so I went with the Yami stainless and also bought an extra to keep under the seat just in case it broke in the middle of nowhere. After 3 years Im still running the same cable and still have the same spare under the seat, go figure , if I didn't have the spare the cable would probably have broke already  Hmm

    Re: Clutch Cable

Since you have no gallery I'm not sure what year bike you have.  The stock cables and hoses for '02 and '03 are shorter than other years (not sure where '04 falls in that). But the Yami/Star accessory page shows stainless clutch cables with just one part# for all years.  I'd heard the stock stainless Yami cables for later years are 2" longer than for '02 '03 models, so using a later clutch cable might make the cable stick out more than the throttle cables, I don't know.  If a problem then try Barnett for the easiest-to-work clutch cables and length matched by model year: http://www.barnettclutches.com/products/cables.aspx

I'm on my 3rd cable. Dunno why they keep busting on me. Maybe since it's a +4. Anyways I got my newest one from http://www.motionpro.com/search/motorcycle/armor_coat_cables/ I like the build of it over barnett and also it was made and mailed quick.

You broke a Barnett cable?  Seriously?

Anyway, if helpful, every oil change I spray WD40 on the ends of all cables to keep the ball-ends lubed so they rotate in their sockets.  Also, for the clutch, I check it often and avoid over-tightening the cable making it stretched too tight since that causes stress when pulling in the clutch lever.  I also make sure the adjuster boot is in place.  They will still break sometimes but these things make a positive difference in cable life. BTW if you need the +4 and the cable isn't binding then it doesn't affect cable life.

I don't know if you have a Barnett SR2 with red or green extra-heavy springs but that sometimes wears cables.  The SR2 with the normal silver springs does fine.  Mine's been there a few years and even with a stock cable no problems.  If you use a Barnett clutch spring you will appreciate and benefit from a Barnett clutch cable to handle the extra stress.

I tried going to Barnett's website and my antivirus program started alerting like crazy! Don't know why... I'll try again from another computer. I will take your advice and keep cables lubed since it did break inside the clutch lever.

clutch cable size. Edit with Pic:  http://rswarrior.com/forums/p/110845/912646.aspx#912646

Here's what a Barnett looks like from my ride. The Barrel rotates about the swaged end so there isn't any twisting. I would suggest you check your cable routing for the cause of the failures and also a close inspection of the threaded adjustment screw @ the perch for a sharp burr, lever pivot bolt & brg although the failure appears to be caused by tension.

    Hey Guys,

Just wondering what the difference is between barnett clutch cable and the regular stock one? Is it worth the difference?

    Thanks

I don't remember the difference in cost, if there is one but it's definitely a better engineered product and won't stretch once adjusted. Their new High Efficiency clutch cables feature a nylon coated inner wire and are better yet IMO! Here's a couple of photos of the Barrel & swaged ends after 22,000 miles Wink Just like new... no deformation or twisting
