    Stripped Thread

I found a bolt missing on the fork guards a few weeks ago. I went and got a new bolt and when I went to tighten it I found it wouldn't. Stripped! Does anyone have a solution or advice. Appreciate any help.

Don't just tap it out to a larger size go to a auto parts store and buy a heli coil kit for your size bolt. you will then tap it out larger but install a heli coil bringing back down to the original size then your bolt head will be the same size and it will look original

Simple solution to the stripped screw:

You'll need a M6 x 1.0 pitch 4-flute plug tap preferably. Grind the sharp point off of the tap (optional). There will be enough remaining threads in the fork to pick-up with the new tap. Re-thread the unthreaded portion of the existing hole until the tap bottoms out.

Alternately, and a better repair, you can increase the hole depth 1st with a #8 tap drill, for the M6, and then follow up with the abovementioned.

The AIS Cover screw 90149-06302-00 is M6 x 20 mm long w/same head and can be cut back to fit the new hole depth Wink  .... the original fork cover screw is only 12mm long and is the root cause of the problem.

Your other choice, as stated by others, is to install a thread insert which isn't for the faint of heart IMO. If you have that capability fine. The only obvious advantage is that all 4-screws will remain the same length but at a much much higher repair cost.

I've been down both roads on this repair. The only difference was i didn't know about the AIS Cover screw at the time so i replaced the 4-frt screws with SS soc hd cap screws & washers. Ultimately, i installed thd inserts after stripping 2-holes and reinstalled the stock screws Tongue Tied

    Good luck

Not sure why all the stuffed threads when you are fastening down plastic? Blue locktite and the recommended 13 Nm for the M6 will work fine.

    Re: Stripped Thread

Great advice, I now have a solution path. I know many have simply removed the fork guards and I have considered this, but I really had wanted to install chrome fork guards.

    Thanks everyone.

Yea plus its cool that we all want to go the extra mile to make things better not just stick on a bandaid. Good luck and have fun.
