    Powder coat ?

A week ago, I got some pieces powder coated from a local shop.  The pieces came out great, but they have a bit of a shine to them.  They were suppose to be flat black like the other factory parts on my bike. They guy did show me a sample they had in the showroom and it was the flat black I was looking for.  My question is, they said that the bit of a shine will fade and it will get to the flat black.  They have no problem with me taking the parts back and to fix them if the were not correct, but I don't want to take them off agian if I don't have to.  I posted a couple pics.  The flash makes them look even brighter than they actually look in person.  It's like a minor flaw in your paint, most won't even notice, but you will!!!! Will they "fade"?

Might be the wrong finish, look kinda glossy to me in the picsCool

I thought one of the pros to powder coating was that it dosen't fade

No, they will not fade. He should have given you flat black powder coat and or matte. What he gave you was Satin Powder Coat.

I took a part in to see what can be done with it.  It is there flat black finish, but for some reason it came out with a bit of a shine.  They are going to try to bake the piece a bit longer to see if it will dull it up a bit.

That is an interesting approach to this problem.

I wonder if you could lightly wet sand it to get the gloss off....I know it's not like clearcoat but wouldn't that dull it a bit?

Sounds to me like he used the wrong powder.

Just because you aren't paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Sounds like you got the wrong finish.

Looks like the wrong finish to me also.  Seems like they figured anything that isn't gloss is matte or something.  I think Ed's probably right.

This reminds me of the other morning when I went to get breakfast at McDonalds and ordered a number 4 for my wife then ordered a sausage biscuit with egg for myself.  The girl mumbled a little in Spanish and turned to look at the board behind her and then told me that McDonalds doesn't have sausage biscuits (with egg or otherwise).  But get this, her solution was for me to order a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit but without the bacon and I'd have what I want somehow.  lol  I kid you not!  To make things even worse, the number 4 I ordered for my wife....  it's a sausage biscuit with egg value meal.  I had to point to the picture to order it and she had to get the manager over (a second time) to explain to her (in Spanish) how to order just the sandwich without the rest of the meal.  Sad  After all that, I still ended up without my biscuit.  Anyway, just because they don't know what flat black is doesn't make what they gave you it.  lol  I hope they get it fixed up for ya!

Apparently my powder coater also agrees that it may not be exactly "flat" black.  He ordered a new batch of flat black and is going to re-coat one of my pieces to see what's giong.  I did get the bike out into the sun and it actually looks pretty good in natural light.  Although a perfect match is best!!!!Big Smile

I used a texture black on my swingarm it is almost spot on. It has very little gloss but isn't flat.

matt @ PE calls it solor black - dont know helps or if thats what the guy is ordering.

its the surface that determine shine, so any amount of texture should dull it
